The HMLMG (Heavy M-LMG) is the T2 light machine gun — 50-round mag, fast fire rate, but punishing recoil. Best for spray-and-pray suppression at close range or static defence. Most players consider the recoil too hard to use as a primary; it sees use mostly as a base-defence weapon where you don't need to track moving targets at distance.
Niche. 50-round mag is great; recoil is harsh. Best for static defence positions or spray-and-pray engagements. Most players prefer Custom SMG or Thompson at the same tier.
M249 is T3 / drop-only with 100-round mag and faster fire. HMLMG is T2 with 50-round mag. M249 wins on raw stats; HMLMG is more accessible (craftable).
The Heavy Machine Gun is Rust's sustained-fire monster — a drop-only weapon with a massive magazine that excels at suppressing fire, vehicle defence and base defence against multi-attacker pushes. You don't pick it for stealth or efficiency; you pick it for those moments when the answer is 'spray everyone within 50 metres until they stop moving'.
Effective at 5-50 metres. The HMLMG's recoil pattern is ferocious so distance and stationary positions help. It eats through ammo so fast that running it on a roam without a backup gun is irresponsible.
The HMLMG accepts standard rifle attachments, and the right kit transforms it from a comedy gun into a real PvP tool:
Some players run **Incendiary Rifle Ammo** for fire damage area denial during base defence.
Vs **M249**: M249 is also drop-only, slightly different fire characteristics. M249 has tighter recoil; HMLMG has bigger mag and higher per-round damage. They're both luxury tools.
Vs **Minigun**: Minigun is the meme weapon — terrible accuracy, devastating volume. HMLMG is far more practical for anything other than 'group melts a base wall' meme.
Vs **AK47**: the AK is craftable, cheap, accurate at range, and wins almost every 1v1. The HMLMG is for situations where you have multiple targets and you don't care about ammo cost.
Pair the HMLMG with a **Python or M92** secondary for the inevitable mid-fight reload window. Always wear **Metal Facemask + Roadsign** — you're a high-value target the moment people hear the brrt. Bring **Pure Max Health Tea** for the HP buffer that converts sustained-fire return shots into survivable trades.
