The Minigun is Rust's heaviest weapon — 100-round mag of 5.56 with a rotary spin-up before firing and a 5-second reload window after. High DPS once spinning, but the spin-up delay (~1.5s) and reload time (~5s) make it impractical for most combat scenarios. Best for static base defence positions or specific raid scenarios.
Press R to reload. Total reload window is ~5 seconds (1.5s spin-down + 3.5s reload animation). Slowest reload of any Rust weapon. See our how-to-reload-minigun page for the detailed mechanic.
Drop only — Bradley APC, Patrol Helicopter, very rarely from elite crates. Cannot be crafted.
Situational. High DPS once firing but the spin-up + reload windows are punishing. Best for static defence at chokepoints or as a heli-suppression weapon. Not for roaming.
The Minigun is Rust's biggest meme weapon — drop-only, terrible accuracy, devastating ammo consumption, but capable of melting walls of incoming bullets if you have the ammo budget. It's used almost exclusively for clan-vs-clan group fights, base defence against multi-attacker raids, and YouTube content. As a serious weapon for a competent solo, it's almost never the right pick.
Effective range is 0-30 metres at point-blank suppression density. Past 30m the spread is so wide that you're hosing bullets randomly. The Minigun isn't a 'kill' weapon — it's an 'area-deny' weapon.
The Minigun takes no attachments. Loadout is purely about **ammo budget**:
Bring **600+ rounds of standard 5.56** as your baseline; less than that and you can't sustain a fight long enough to justify pulling the gun.
Vs **HMLMG**: HMLMG is also drop-only but better accuracy and recoil. HMLMG is the practical choice; Minigun is the meme.
Vs **M249**: M249 is also drop-only and has tighter recoil. Minigun is purely 'spray louder'.
Vs **AK47**: AK wins almost every 1v1 because Minigun spread is too wide for accurate shots. Minigun only wins when ammo volume overwhelms the engagement.
Pair the Minigun with a **Python or M92** sidearm for the inevitable 'too tight to spray' moments. Always wear **Metal Facemask + Roadsign** — you'll be the loudest target in the fight. **Pure Max Health Tea + Bear Pie** are mandatory; Minigun fights are HP-attrition battles where the side with more HP wins.
