The M39 is the T3 semi-auto rifle — same fire mode as the SAR but with significantly more damage per shot and a bigger mag (20 vs 16). The endgame click-aim weapon for players who don't want to deal with AK or LR-300 auto recoil. Common pick for late-wipe defenders and mid-range PvP.

When to use the M39
The M39 is the upgrade path from the SAR for established players: tier 3 craft, semi-auto fire, much higher damage per shot than the SAR. It excels at the 30-80 metre range that SAR struggles with — picking targets off at distance with controllable recoil and credible per-shot damage.
Sweet spot is 25-60 metres. Inside 25m an AK or SMG out-DPSes it; past 80m a Bolt Action or L96 gives more damage per shot. The M39 is the 'medium-range surgeon' of Rust's rifle lineup.
Loadout & attachments
The M39 takes standard rifle attachments and benefits from all of them:
- **8x Scope** — the standard. Iron sights are usable but a scope unlocks the M39's actual range advantage.
- **16x Scope** — overkill for most engagements but useful on long open maps.
- **Muzzle Brake** — flattens recoil for follow-up shots.
- **Silencer** — viable for solo roams; the slight damage drop is acceptable.
- **Ammo: 5.56 Rifle Ammo** — standard. **Explosive 5.56** is brutal at the M39's range and worth the cost on big engagements.
M39 vs alternatives
Vs **Bolt Action Rifle**: Bolt is single-shot, more damage. M39 is semi-auto, better follow-up, total higher DPS at the M39's range. Bolt for one-shot ambush; M39 for sustained mid-range.
Vs **SAR**: SAR is T2, M39 is T3. M39 is the obvious upgrade once your component supply is stable.
Vs **AK47**: AK wins inside 25m, M39 wins past 40m. Many established players carry both as a roaming pair.
Common mistakes
- **Engaging at SMG range.** Inside 15m the M39's slower fire rate loses to anything full-auto. Switch to your secondary or break range.
- **No scope.** Iron sights are an accidental nerf. Always run at least a Holosight, ideally an 8x.
- **Single-tapping when spam works.** Semi-auto isn't sniper-only; in a real fight, hammer the trigger.
- **Crafting too early.** T3 access means you should already have some sulfur stockpile — if you don't, the SAR is the right call until then.
Kit & pairing
Pair the M39 with a **Custom SMG or MP5** secondary for the close-range moments. Always run a sight (8x or scope). **Pure Max Health Tea** is standard for any engagement; the M39's recovery time between shots means a bad first trade is survivable with the HP buffer.
