Safe-zone hub for vending machines, recyclers, and a T1/T2 workbench.
Non-hostile monuments where players cannot deal damage to each other. Vending machines, recyclers, workbenches and gambling — your hub for trading, repairs and recycling without PvP risk.

Outpost is the bigger of the two safe-zone hubs in Rust — a walled compound full of vending machines, a couple of recyclers, both Tier 1 and Tier 2 workbenches, an oil refinery and a small band of patrolling scientists outside the gate. Inside the safe zone, players cannot deal damage to each other (turrets enforce this). It's the default trip after a fresh spawn for buying components, recycling junk into scrap, and crafting at workbench tiers most players don't have at home.
Inside the safe zone, weapons holster automatically. Players cannot inflict damage on each other — attempting to draw a weapon or attack will flag you hostile and the perimeter auto-turrets will shoot you on sight. The hostile timer lasts five minutes and follows you around the map. Behaviour to avoid:
Note: scientist NPCs do spawn outside the safe zone and will engage you if you approach the perimeter. Plan your approach from the safe-zone direction.
Yes. Inside the visible compound walls, players cannot damage each other. The perimeter auto-turrets enforce this — attempting to shoot, melee or grenade another player flags you hostile and the turrets engage immediately.
Outpost spawns at a fixed monument location randomised per-map. Open the in-game map (G key by default) and look for the 🛒 icon — every official Rust map has exactly one Outpost.
Outpost validation refers to the auto-turret system that checks whether players inside the safe zone have hostile flags. If you've damaged another player anywhere on the map within the last five minutes, the validation system marks you as hostile and the turrets engage on entry.
Yes, but outside the no-build radius — usually 50-80 metres from the central walls. The radius is shown by a red circle on the in-game map. Building too close gives you a 'cannot place' error.
Components for crafting, M4 ammo from the scrap-vendor (cheap), and kit pieces (Hazmat suit components, building plans). Avoid the 'free spin' RNG-style vending — the EV is genuinely poor.
Some are (default Facepunch-set NPC vendors), others are player-set. Player vending machines outside the central core fluctuate based on supply. Compare prices before buying — the same item often varies by 30-50 scrap between machines.
Outpost is the most-visited single monument in Rust. Within the first hour of a wipe, almost every active player passes through it at least once — for the recyclers, the workbenches, the vending stock, or to research a key item. Outpost shapes the early-wipe economy because the recyclers determine how fast scrap circulates, and the vending machines set the de-facto price floor for components.
Long-term, Outpost remains a regular destination. Mid-wipe you'll come back for Tier 2 crafting (most solo and duo bases never own a T2 of their own), for repair-bench access, and to drone-deliver kits when you can't risk a physical return. The safe-zone status makes it the rare PvP-free venue, which is why scrap-rich players park their alts here to scout incoming activity at gate level.
Outpost's location relative to your base is one of the biggest factors in early-game viability. A base 200m from Outpost has access to a recycler in under a minute; a base 1.5km away has to schedule trips and risk getting rolled on the road. When picking your wipe-day spawn spot, the distance-to-Outpost and distance-to-Bandit Camp are usually the two most important factors — water, ore and roads come later.
If you're new to the game, the Rust farming cheat sheet covers the basic resource flow you'll be recycling at Outpost. For mid-wipe raid math on the loot you can buy, the Raid Calculator shows what targets your scrap can actually pop open.
