The Semi-Auto Rifle is the mid-game's most-carried rifle. Decent damage, 16-round mag, accepts standard 5.56 (cheap to feed), and semi-auto fire means you don't have to learn an auto-pattern. Most players spend more time with the SAR equipped than the AK because by the time they craft an AK, they're often already in late wipe.

Pro tips

Frequently asked questions

Is the SAR good in Rust?

Yes — for T2 it's the best rifle. 16-round mag, accepts 5.56, semi-auto means no recoil pattern to learn. Most-carried rifle in mid-wipe.

SAR vs AK?

AK is T3, fully-automatic, 30-round mag. SAR is T2, semi-auto, 16-round mag. AK has higher DPS in skilled hands; SAR is easier to use and cheaper. New players often prefer SAR until they learn AK recoil.

How do I craft a SAR?

T2 workbench. Components include 1 semi-auto body + metal frags + spring. Default-known recipe; no research required.

When to use the SAR

The Semi-Auto Rifle (SAR) is one of the most-used guns in Rust — early-mid wipe primary that's accurate, easy to control, and tier 2 to craft. It's the rifle that gets most players through their first proper PvP engagements before they can stably craft an AK or M39. Versatile from 10m out to 60m+ depending on your patience.

Sweet spot is 15-50 metres with single-tap fire. Past 60m you can still hit but bullet drop and damage falloff make Bolt Action a better pick. Inside 10m an SMG dominates — switch to your sidearm in tight quarters.

Loadout & attachments

The SAR takes standard rifle attachments and benefits from each:

SAR vs alternatives

Vs **AK47**: AK is T3, full-auto, much higher DPS but harder recoil. SAR is the cleaner mid-range pick. Carry both if budget allows.

Vs **M39**: M39 is the T3 upgrade — higher per-shot damage, semi-auto. SAR is the version you build first.

Vs **Bolt Action**: Bolt is single-shot, much higher damage per round, slower follow-up. SAR is faster, friendlier, less ammo-cost-per-engagement.

Vs **Thompson / Custom SMG**: rifles for distance, SMGs for close. SAR loses inside 10m almost every time.

Common mistakes

Kit & pairing

Pair the SAR with a **Semi-Auto Pistol** or **Python** sidearm for close range. **Pure Max Health Tea** is standard. **Roadsign + Coffee Can** is the right armour tier. The SAR + Roadsign + Tea combo is the most-used mid-wipe loadout in Rust for a reason — it's accurate, affordable, and survivable.
